Good Morning! We have completed the Book of Amos in the Old Testament. Thomas and I share a few of our thoughts with you about the book of Amos. Amos is a shepherd from a small town called Tekoa. He is sent to announce God’s judgment on the Northern kingdom of Israel with strong poetic imagery. Amos speaks passionately about God’s concern for the poor and urges a return to righteousness and justice. Amos, the farmer turned prophet, lashes out at sin unflinchingly. The name Amos is derived from the Hebrew root amas to lift a burden, to carry. Thus, his name means Burden or Burden-Bearer. Amos lives up to the meaning of his name by bearing up under his divinely given burden of declaring judgement to rebellious Israel. The Greek and Latin titles are both transliterated in English as Amos. We read God’s perspective on issues of social justice and should be prepared to have a heart full of compassion.
